VAIO SZ Series Docking Station Reviews

Adds several ports to notebook. Allows the bottom of notebook to vent better. Makes notebook keyboard more ergonomic.
A bit pricy! Sometimes has troubles detecting notebook.

This VGP-PRSZ1 docking station is the perfect match to any SZ Series VAIO notebook. If you use your notebook as much as we do I'd recommend this docking station. It allows your hands to be in a comfortable position while typing and gives the notebook better ventilation. This docking station doesn't come with a supplied power adapter so you have to use the one provided with your VAIO.

Small size, light weight, DVI, VGA, Ethernet.
Only 3 USB ports, no power adapter included, no optical drive bay, no SPDIF, no TV out, very expensive.

This will be the 5th laptop docking station I have used. I used the following docking stations: IBM Thinkpads, Dell Latitudes, & Dell Inspiron. Therefore, I have a lot of other models to compare this SZ docking station to.I have been using this Sony SZ docking station for 2 weeks. One of the main reasons I chose this docking station was for the DVI port. After using it, I was not able to have both the DVI & VGA hooked up at the same time. It doe not have a SPDIF port, or any sound other port, now I need to buy a USB to SPDIF converter. It only has 3 USB ports! This is my biggest complain, since there is no PS/2 or parallel ports, who only needs 3 USB ports? Now I need to buy a USB hub to connect my external: mouse keyboard, printer, hard drives, speakers, & TV tuner! On other Sony docks they included an extra bay for an optical drive, I wish they would have put that on this one. For the price of this dock, you?d think it would have come with a power adapter, but it didn?t.In conclusion, I regret purchasing this docking station. I should have purchased the Belkin universal expresscard docking station. The only reason I didn?t buy the Belkin was because of the lack of GPU I read about within it. So since I had to have DVI on the Sony 128MB GPU, I wasted my money on this SZ Dock and now I have to buy more USB add-ons to make it do everything I need it to.

This unit feels durable and has plenty of USB ports (3) and a DVI-D port (along with a VGA port).
This unit is expensive, does not come with a power cord, does not lock the notebook computer into place, and has no audio output.

I have only used one other docking station and that was with a Dell notebook at work. This Sony docking station is pretty unimpressive to weak compared with that set up. With the Dell, once I popped the notebook into the docking station, the computer recognized it and behaved accordingly. With the Sony, one needs to configure the laptop not to sleep when the cover is open, tweak up the video to work with the monitor, etc. It seems very odd that the laptop just sits on top of this thing. There is no way to lock it in. It does have an "undock" button. This product has no audio outputs, no mic inputs, no parallel outputs and no PS/2 ports. And it does not come with a power cord, so you must either keep moving your one power cord around or buy another one (on top of the already high price of this unit). If you want a bare bones basic docking station to it easier to use your SZ with a standard monitor and keyboard, at a high price, this unit is for you. But it ain't sexy, even for a docking station.

HEAVY DUTY / SMALL / MADE IN JAPAN / 3 x USB
NO ON/OFF CAPABILITY

NICE LITTLE DOCKING STATION (AS I MENTIONED BEFORE - IT'S MADE IN JAPAN - SURPRISE WITH TODAY'S COMMONLY MADE ELSEVERE). THE ONLY ITEM I WOULD LIKE TO SEE ADDED - IS A ON/OFF SWITCH - SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO OPEN LAPTOP. OTHERWISE A SOLID EQUIPMENT FOR THE PRICE (IT IS A LITTLE EXPENSIVE). IF YOU WANT A STATIONARY CONNECTION FOR YOUR NOTEBOOK - VGP-PRSZ1 - THE WAY TO GO. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Small, compact and useful; needed ports accessible including power and ext display
Expensive

If you have an SZ and if you travel with it a lot but do not want to deal with external disconnects, this is an ideal piece. Small and compact and does not take up much space. I would recommend this as well as a second power supply so you are detached and gone in seconds.
